Grammarly vs ProWritingAid: Which Fits Your Writing?

Compare the real costs, limits, and workflows before you choose.

The short answer

Choose around the job you need done.

Start with Grammarly if your main job is editing everyday client messages and business documents. Evaluate ProWritingAid if you want detailed reports for sustained revisions or creative writing. Try the same sample in your actual writing app before paying; neither tool can decide whether your facts or intended meaning are correct.

How we compared: This is a research-based comparison of official pricing and product documentation checked on September 7, 2026. Recommendations are our editorial judgment. Examples below are hypothetical. This article contains no affiliate links.

Choose by the writing you do most often

A useful writing assistant should help you finish a document you are willing to send. The number of suggestions it produces is a poor measure of success: a tool can flag many sentences without finding the errors that matter to your client.

Our recommendation is to start your comparison with one ordinary workday. If you mostly write emails, proposals and short updates, evaluate Grammarly on those tasks. If you revise chapters, essays or substantial drafts, evaluate ProWritingAid’s reports. These are starting points for a trial, not results from a head-to-head accuracy benchmark.

A freelancer who does both should identify the more expensive problem. Missing a promise in a proposal, flattening a distinctive voice and spending an hour on minor wording are different issues. Write down which one you want the subscription to solve.

What will you actually pay?

The following are US-dollar subscription figures before applicable taxes. Monthly billing and an annual commitment are different purchasing decisions.

Plan Monthly billing Annual commitment
Grammarly Pro $30 per member per month $144 per member per year, equivalent to $12/month
ProWritingAid Premium $30 per month Check current annual checkout and sale terms

Grammarly’s support page confirms the monthly and annual Pro prices. Twelve monthly payments would total $360, compared with $144 paid for a year; the lower annual equivalent does not make it a $12 month-to-month subscription. Grammarly Pro billing

ProWritingAid’s pricing page shows Premium at $30 billed monthly and a separate annual promotion. At review, that promotion advertised $90 for the year with 25% off; treat it as a sale, not a permanent standard renewal price. Premium includes unlimited line-editing report runs and 25+ analysis reports. More advanced story features and credits have their own plan conditions. ProWritingAid plans and offer terms

Do not buy a lifetime option solely because its equivalent monthly price looks small. First decide whether the features included today solve a recurring need, and check exactly what the offer covers. There is no reason to commit for years before seeing whether you will use the tool next month.

Run a comparison that reflects your work

Use three short, non-confidential samples: an email, a paragraph of your typical client deliverable and a passage where you deliberately want a particular voice. Keep an untouched copy so you can see what changed.

Check What to record
Genuine errors Did it catch grammar or punctuation mistakes you agree are errors?
Meaning Did a suggested edit change a number, obligation or qualification?
Voice Did the revision still sound appropriate for the reader?
Friction Could you use it comfortably in your normal app and document format?
Editing effort Did reviewing suggestions save time or create more decisions?

Accept suggestions one at a time during the evaluation. A cleaner-looking paragraph is not necessarily more accurate. In a proposal, changing “may include” to “includes” would matter more than removing a repeated adjective.

For a long draft, run one report or editing pass with a clear purpose. Fixing repetition, reviewing sentence structure and checking story pacing are separate activities. Trying to maximize every score can lead to endless changes without improving the piece.

Compatibility matters more than a feature checklist

Before subscribing, use your own browser, operating system and main writing application. Confirm that suggestions appear where you compose, that comments and formatting remain usable, and that switching the assistant off is straightforward.

Do the same with a realistic document length. This article does not promise that either product is always faster or more reliable. Your trial should answer those questions in the environment you will actually use.

What about client confidentiality?

Check both your client’s requirements and the product’s current controls before submitting restricted material. A statement about model training is not a statement that no processing or storage occurs.

Grammarly documents a Product Improvement and Training setting; review how it applies to your account and plan. ProWritingAid says it does not use your writing to train its AI. These policies address an important question, but they do not replace checking the full terms relevant to a client project. Grammarly’s training control, ProWritingAid’s data guidance

For the initial evaluation, use invented client names and non-sensitive text. You can assess most editing behavior without uploading an actual confidential deliverable.

When neither paid plan is necessary

If you write occasionally and the free version already catches the errors you care about, keep using it. Upgrade when a specific limitation interrupts your work, not because the paid tool reports more possible improvements.

Neither assistant verifies a quotation against its source or establishes that technical, financial or legal claims are true. A final read for facts, meaning and audience remains part of the writing process.

Common questions

Is ProWritingAid only for novelists?

No. Its reports can be evaluated on other writing too. Its current offering includes many story-focused features, so a business writer should judge the value of the editing features they will actually use rather than counting the whole package.

Will Grammarly make all my writing sound the same?

That is something to watch for when accepting rewrites, not an inevitable outcome. Keep changes that preserve your intended voice and reject the rest. Use the same standard with ProWritingAid.

Which should I try first?

Start with the sample closest to your most frequent task: everyday professional communication for Grammarly, or sustained revision for ProWritingAid. Keep the product only if its suggestions improve that task at an acceptable cost and level of effort.
