Buffer Free allows three channels and ten queued posts on each. At twice weekly, ten posts cover five weeks; daily posting fills that queue sooner. Essentials expands the queue and bills per paid channel. Its displayed US$5 monthly equivalent is US$60 billed yearly per channel, so three channels total US$180 yearly. Upgrade for a capacity or feature requirement you actually have.

Who this is for
You schedule your own social posts, you are on Buffer’s free plan, and you want to know whether paying changes anything that matters.
The comparison

The limit that actually stops you
Check both the channel count and queue size. Ten scheduled posts cover five weeks at twice weekly or ten days at daily frequency. A twice-weekly month can fit Free; a batch of more than ten posts per channel cannot. You can refill the queue after posts publish.
Do the per-channel math first

- Count the channels you post to weekly. Not the ones you own, the ones you use.
- For the displayed annual rate, multiply paid channels by $60 to budget the yearly bill. Two cost $120 yearly; four cost $240.
- The $5 monthly figure already spreads the annual bill over twelve months. Compare the separately selected monthly-billing option before choosing a commitment.
- Drop any channel you have not posted to in a month before paying for it.
Avoid paying for channels you do not use. Review planned usage before comparing subscriptions.
When free is enough
- You post two or three times a week on one or two platforms.
- You schedule weekly, so a 10-post queue never fills.
- You draft elsewhere and use the tool only to post.
- Your business does not depend on social at all, and this is presence rather than pipeline.
When to pay
- Your batch exceeds ten queued posts per channel. A lower-frequency month may fit Free.
- You post daily. Ten posts is a week and a half.
- You have four or more active channels. The free plan caps at three.
- You use Buffer’s community reply features regularly and hit the five-a-week suggestion limit.
Cheaper alternatives to check first
- Post natively on one platform and schedule only the other, if one platform is where your customers are.
- Reduce to two channels and post better rather than wider. Our Later vs Buffer comparison covers which tool suits which platform mix.
- Batch the writing, not the scheduling. Drafting ten posts in one sitting and scheduling weekly keeps you inside the free limits.
- Repurpose instead of inventing. Our guide to repurposing one article into social posts covers where the drafts come from.
Before you upgrade
- Check the current per-channel price on the page; per-channel pricing changes the arithmetic as you grow.
- Decide monthly or annual. Annual at $60 per channel is worth it only if the habit is established.
- Remove dormant channels from the account first, so you are not billed for them.
- Export or note your scheduled posts before changing plans.
Frequently asked questions
Is Buffer’s free plan still useful in 2026?
Yes, for light posting: 3 channels, 10 queued posts each, and the AI Assistant listed on the plan.
Does Essentials include the AI Assistant?
The pricing page lists the AI Assistant across Free, Essentials and Team, and lists unlimited AI replies on the paid plans.
What counts as a channel?
Each connected social account. Two accounts on one platform count as two channels, which is where costs surprise people.
Is annual billing cheaper?
Buffer advertises a two-month saving on annual billing. The $5/month display is the equivalent of the $60 yearly charge, not a separate month-to-month offer. Check the monthly billing selection for that rate.
