ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro vs Google AI Pro

Three equal glass workflow tools illustrate comparing ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and Google AI Pro.

For a one-person business, pick the assistant by the work you do most. Consider Claude Pro for document workflows and repeatable procedures, Google AI Pro for supported apps on a personal Google account, or ChatGPT Plus for drafting with projects and scheduled tasks. Their quoted monthly USD prices are about $20. Each offers training controls, with retention and safety exceptions; Google Workspace business accounts need separate licensing. Check the price in your own region first.

Who this is for

You are paying for one AI subscription, not three, and you want the one that fits your working day: client emails, proposals, research, spreadsheets, and the occasional long document you must not misread.

Manual baseline: what you are actually buying

The free tiers of all three can draft text. Paid tiers add usage headroom and selected features. Start by checking which task or limit actually requires payment; occasional use alone does not establish that a subscription is worthwhile.

What each plan costs

Individual plan prices in USD. Claude Max and Google amounts retain the September 20, 2026 page observations; Claude Pro billing and ChatGPT Plus USD documentation were rechecked September 21. Tax and regional pricing may differ.
Plan Documented price Currency note
Claude Pro US$20 billed monthly, or US$200 paid upfront annually (approximately US$17/month as a rounded display) USD on the public pricing page
Claude Max From $100 a month USD
Google AI Pro $19.99 a month USD with the region set to the United States
ChatGPT Plus US$20 per month, billed monthly Official help and USD-labelled announcement; no annual billing

Sources: Claude pricing, Google AI plans, ChatGPT pricing. OpenAI documents Plus at US$20 per month, billed monthly. The original page visit showed yen; this USD figure comes from the Plus help article and January 16, 2026 announcement, not a US checkout or currency conversion. Open the pricing page from your own country before budgeting, and check whether tax is added at checkout.

What each one is good at

Claude Pro

Anthropic’s pricing page lists Claude Code, Projects and skills on Pro. Skills are folders of instructions Claude loads when a task matches, which suits a solo business with repeatable procedures such as a weekly client update or a proposal checklist. Our guides to Claude skills for freelancers cover that in detail. Consider its document workflow if long client briefs are a recurring task.

Google AI Pro

Google’s plan page lists expanded access to its Gemini models and Deep Research, Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Sheets, 5 TB of storage shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos, and family sharing. Google AI Pro is for personal Google accounts. It does not license Gemini for a business-domain Google Workspace account; check your Workspace edition separately. Note that the page marks some features as available in the United States only, so read the footnotes for your country. Our guides to Gemini in Gmail and Gemini meeting notes cover related workflows, whose Workspace entitlements must not be inferred from this consumer plan.

ChatGPT Plus

OpenAI’s pricing page lists advanced reasoning models, expanded messages and uploads, expanded Deep Research, and projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs on Plus. Projects keep files and instructions for one ongoing job together, which our ChatGPT Projects guide covers for client work. There is also a cheaper Go tier with fewer of those features.

Training and privacy settings, side by side

All three offer training preferences, but these are not no-retention or no-human-review guarantees. Safety review, feedback and program participation can have separate terms. This matters more than the price difference if you paste client material.

Data-control statements from each vendor’s own help pages, rechecked September 21, 2026.
Vendor Setting What the page says
OpenAI “Improve the model for everyone” in Settings, then Data Controls Turning it off means conversations stay in your history but are not used to train ChatGPT. Temporary Chats are deleted after 30 days, are not used for training, and may be reviewed only to monitor for abuse.
Anthropic “Model Improvement” in Privacy Settings Chats are used for training when you choose to allow it, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or when you join a program such as the Trusted Tester Program. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when the setting is on.
Google Keep Activity, in Gemini Apps Activity Activity is auto-deleted after 18 months by default, adjustable to 3 or 36 months. A subset of chats are reviewed by human reviewers and kept up to three years, disconnected from your account. With activity off, chats are still kept 72 hours. New chats are not used for model training unless you submit feedback; safety processing still applies.

The practical reading for a freelancer: human review is documented for Google’s consumer assistant and for abuse monitoring at OpenAI, so no consumer plan should be treated as confidential by default. If a client’s agreement forbids sending their material to third parties, that clause decides the question, not the setting.

How to choose in one pass

Check where work lives, test a recurring task, and define permitted client data before choosing an AI plan.
  1. Where does your work already live? A personal Google account may point to Google AI Pro; a business-domain Workspace account requires checking Workspace licensing first. Compare Claude or ChatGPT against the document tasks you need.
  2. What is your hardest recurring task? Use the documented workflow fit as a shortlist: Claude for document procedures, eligible Google apps for inbox work, and ChatGPT for broad drafting or scheduled routines. This is not a tested quality ranking.
  3. What must never be pasted? Write that list before you subscribe, and keep it next to your contracts.
  4. Test on the free tier for a week using representative tasks with non-sensitive or permitted material.
  5. Then pay for one, monthly at first. For Claude Pro, compare the US$200 upfront annual commitment with US$20 month-to-month; choose annual only if you expect to keep it for the year.

What this comparison does not cover

Answer quality, speed and accuracy depend on your prompts and change with every model release, so they are not compared here. All three describe usage limits in relative terms rather than message counts on these pages, so they are not compared numerically. Business and team tiers, which have separate data terms, are not covered.

Frequently asked questions

Is one of these clearly better for a freelancer?

No. The deciding factors are where your files live, what your hardest task is, and your client confidentiality terms.

Can I pay for two for a month and compare?

You can use monthly subscriptions to compare them on permitted representative tasks. Set a review date and cancel any plan you do not need before its next renewal. This is a suggested evaluation, not a tested quality recommendation.

Do any of them include a business-grade privacy commitment?

Not on these individual plans. Business and enterprise tiers have different terms; check those pages if a client requires it in writing.

Where do the USD prices come from?

Claude Max and Google USD figures come from the original September 20 pricing-page observations. Claude Pro billing was rechecked on its official pricing page September 21, 2026: US$200 upfront annually, displayed as a rounded US$17/month, or US$20 billed monthly. ChatGPT Plus comes from official USD documentation checked September 21, 2026; the original OpenAI page displayed yen. Check current local rates and tax.

Sources and method

Revised September 21, 2026 using the linked official Claude pricing page for Pro billing, Plus help, OpenAI’s January 16 USD announcement, Google AI plan eligibility and vendor data-control documentation. The original September 20 research recorded Claude USD, Google USD after a country-selector change, and OpenAI JPY; the Plus USD correction and Claude Pro annual-billing clarification are documentation checks, not US checkout observations. Claude Max and Google price observations remain dated September 20; they were not freshly price-verified in this revision. Secondary Go/Google AI Plus price rows were omitted to keep this comparison on its named plans. Recommendations reflect documented workflows, not comparative tests, subscription use, measured quality or savings. Business and Workspace terms require a separate account-specific check.
