Semrush vs Ahrefs for Freelancers: Which Plan Is Worth It?

Compare the real costs, limits, and workflows before you choose.

The short answer

Choose around the job you need done.

Evaluate Semrush SEO if you want keyword research, audits and rank tracking in one SEO workflow. Evaluate Ahrefs if competitor pages and backlink research drive your deliverables. Start with the specific client report you need to produce. The entry plans differ in limits, and neither tool measures a competitor’s actual analytics.

How we compared: This is a research-based comparison of official pricing and product documentation checked on September 7, 2026. Recommendations are our editorial judgment. Examples below are hypothetical. This article contains no affiliate links.

Define the deliverable before choosing the tool

A freelance SEO subscription should help you make a decision or deliver work a client values. Start by naming that work: a technical audit, keyword plan, competitor analysis, backlink review or recurring ranking report.

Our recommendation is to evaluate Semrush’s SEO plan for an ongoing mix of research, auditing and tracking, and Ahrefs for work centered on competitor pages and links. This is a starting point based on their documented offerings.

Write down the countries, search engines and sites involved. A tool that produces useful results for one market may still need separate evaluation for a smaller niche or another country.

Compare the plans you can actually buy

These are US-dollar monthly subscription figures before taxes. Annual billing, extra users, higher usage and additional products can change the bill.

Plan Listed monthly price Selected limits
Semrush SEO $139 5 websites; 500 tracked keywords
Ahrefs Lite $129 5 projects; 750 tracked keywords; credit limits

Semrush’s current lineup distinguishes its SEO plan from packages that add AI-search capabilities. Do not assume the base price includes every product advertised elsewhere on the website. Select the actual toolkit and check the features attached to it. Semrush SEO and AI-search pricing

Ahrefs Lite lists 1,000 credits per user per month and six months of historical data; Standard has a different price and allowance structure. If you do frequent interactive research, that distinction deserves as much attention as tracked-keyword counts. Ahrefs plan pricing and limits

At these monthly rates, the price difference is $10 per month, or $120 across twelve monthly payments. That is our arithmetic, not an annual-plan quote. A subscription that needs an upgrade to finish your work can easily cost more than this headline difference.

Will the entry plan cover your clients?

Build a short capacity estimate before subscribing. For example, four client sites with 100 tracked keywords each would use 400 tracked keywords if counted once each. Tracking the same terms across additional locations or devices may affect your allowance; check how the vendor counts your exact configuration.

Also count research work that happens outside a scheduled report. Exploring hundreds of possible pages or links may have different usage implications from opening a dashboard once a month. In a trial or demonstration, observe the usage meter while performing a representative task.

Your recurring task What to check
Monthly ranking report Keyword allowance, location/device counting and update frequency
Technical audit Crawl capacity and the issues relevant to your site
Competitor content research Useful page results, historical range and export limits
Link research Relevant link records and the ability to inspect their context
Client delivery Export format, branding needs and any additional seat requirement

Do not purchase extra capacity solely to match a competitor’s larger number. Buy the capacity your reporting process uses.

Treat competitor traffic as an estimate

A competitor traffic figure is not access to that company’s analytics. Ahrefs explains that its organic traffic estimate uses keyword rankings, search volumes and estimated click-through rates. It is useful for research but is not a count of all visits or a verified revenue figure. How Ahrefs estimates organic traffic

Use third-party estimates to identify questions: which pages appear to attract search demand, which topics are missing from your site, and where should you inspect the search results yourself? For your own site, compare findings with first-party search and analytics data rather than replacing it.

Two tools disagreeing does not by itself show that one is broken. Coverage and estimation methods can differ. Record the source and date in a client report and avoid presenting modeled figures as measured facts.

Test one real research question in both

Choose a non-confidential example that resembles your client work. Identify a page that needs improvement, three competing pages and a short set of relevant search terms. Use each product to answer the same question: what should the client change next, and why?

Save the evidence that supports your recommendation. Was a suggested keyword actually relevant? Did a flagged technical issue affect an important page? Did a backlink lead to a useful source when you inspected it?

Record the time you spent interpreting results and preparing the deliverable. We do not provide invented performance scores or a claimed hours-saved figure. Your ability to produce a defensible recommendation is the useful outcome.

When you can postpone a paid subscription

A small site with occasional research may not need an ongoing paid suite. Semrush offers a free account with limits. Check which free tools cover your immediate question before committing. Semrush free-account capabilities

For a one-off assignment, compare a short paid period with an annual commitment. Save the reports and notes you need, and check access and export conditions before cancelling. Recurring rank monitoring and periodic research have different subscription requirements.

Common questions

Which is better for a beginner?

Start with the tool that lets you complete one defined task and explain the result. A bigger dashboard is not automatically a better teacher. Use documentation and validate findings against the actual pages and search results.

Can either guarantee better rankings?

No. A research subscription does not implement improvements or control search results. Evaluate whether it helps you identify, prioritize and measure useful work.

Should I pay for both?

Only if the second product provides evidence or coverage that changes your work enough to justify the extra cost. Establish a clear gap with one product first, then test whether the other fills it.
