Kit Free supports up to 10,000 subscribers, with broadcasts, forms and landing pages. Creator adds automated sequences and is shown at $33/month on annual billing for 1,000 subscribers; its $390 yearly bill equals $32.50/month before display rounding. Consider paying when you need a paid feature, while checking the price for your actual list size and the cost of the annual commitment.

The one feature that decides it

Automated multi-email sequences are the main upgrade trigger in this comparison. Free broadcasts can serve a manual newsletter, and Free can deliver an opt-in incentive; that is different from a timed welcome series with follow-ups. Assess whether that series serves your workflow before paying. The current pricing table lists visual automations and sequences from Creator, not an older one-sequence Free allowance.
Reasons that are not reasons to upgrade
- List size alone. The free plan is documented up to 10,000 subscribers.
- Sending more often. Broadcasts are unlimited on free.
- Selling something. Digital product sales are listed on free.
- Unlimited use of the AI subject line generator, which is a paid-plan feature; compare its usefulness with the full annual cost rather than assuming an upgrade pays off. Our companion article on Kit’s AI features covers exactly what that feature does.
Model the price you will actually pay
- Find your subscriber count today, and your realistic count in twelve months.
- Check the price at that tier on the pricing page, not at the tier you are at now.
- For annual billing, use the displayed yearly total; do not multiply a rounded monthly equivalent. For month-to-month billing, model twelve monthly payments and any tier changes.
- Ask what that yearly figure has to earn. Additional contribution after delivery costs would need to cover the subscription; one client’s revenue alone does not prove payback.
A sensible path for a solo business
- Start free. Publish twelve issues before spending anything, which also tells you whether you will keep publishing.
- Add a form and a landing page, both included, and put them where people already find you.
- Draft any follow-up series you need. Separate free incentive delivery from subsequent emails, then assess the effort and value of automating those follow-ups.
- Upgrade to Creator and build the sequence you already wrote.
- Revisit Pro only when analytics are changing decisions, not when they are interesting.
If you are choosing a platform rather than a plan, our Kit vs Mailchimp comparison covers that decision.
Things to check before switching platforms
- Import and export. Confirm you can take your list and your content out.
- Deliverability setup. Whatever you use, authenticate your sending domain; our email authentication checklist covers SPF, DKIM and DMARC.
- Consent records. Keep evidence of how people subscribed, which matters under several countries’ rules.
- Your archive. If past issues are a resource, make sure they survive the move.
Frequently asked questions
Is Kit really free up to 10,000 subscribers?
The pricing page lists the free plan as up to 10,000 subscribers with unlimited landing pages, forms and broadcasts.
What is the main thing I lose on free?
Visual automations and email sequences, which the page lists from Creator.
How much is Creator?
At 1,000 subscribers the annual option is $390 billed yearly, equivalent to $32.50/month and displayed rounded as $33. This is not the month-to-month rate. Check your subscriber tier and chosen billing period.
Can I downgrade later?
Plan changes are possible, but automations built on a paid plan may stop working. Check before you rely on them, and keep the content outside the tool.

Sources used across the original research and this revision: Kit’s pricing page linked above. Feature rows distinguish subject-line A/B testing, incentive delivery and automated sequences. Annual totals control the arithmetic; the displayed monthly figures are rounded. The upgrade path is an editorial suggestion.
